Henry's Platform - My Top Ten Priorities

My Platform / Where I Stand on some of the current issues

  1. No to tax payer funded Performing Arts center (by no means does this mean i do not support the arts community, after all I am a musician also).

  2. No to retention pay for employees / executives.

  3. Taxes. I will fight for zero and not accept anything more then 2% only if a case can be made for the increase.

  4. I will conduct an overall review of how the city operates. That is, I will start at the top and look at how every department functions and operates looking for effeciencies, better ways of doing things with the goal being to eleminate waste.

  5. Budget. I will go through every line item of the budget looking for waste and opportunties for cost savings.

  6. Will work collobratively with fellow council members for the betterment of the City. I will lead by example.

  7. Fed up with City Hall? All the fighting, poor representation in ward 3 and lack of progress the current city council has had over the last 4 years?

  8. Return garbage pick up to a 7 day schedule.

We need to get back to basics - creating and maintaining jobs in our city through economic development. Then re-focus on the important issues to Londoners such as getting a grip on our ever increasing taxes and the out of control spending. What's important to Londoners - maintaining our infrastructure, providing key services and to improve traffic congestion. If we don't solve these problems, then it makes it even more difficult to fund social programs, help the less fortunate and maintain vital services such as police and fire.

The following will be the focus of my 4 year term on your behalf.

  1. Taxes. I will ensure we hold the line on taxes. My goal is zero increase up to a 2% maximum. I believe we can maintain or reduce taxes by managing the taxpayers hard earned money more responsibly and carefully. Elect me and I will fight to keep taxes down on your behalf. Enough is enough, 40% increase over the last 10 years is totally unacceptable. Plus, our water, sewer and hydro charges are out of control. My own water, sewer and hyrdro rate went up $100 last month. So, does that mean it will cost me an additional $1200 this year? This is totally unacceptable not only for me but for all those people who are on fixed incomes. I will fight on your behalf to gain control of the out of control charges that we are being overwhelmed with.

  2. Control Spending and go through every line on the budget. The City must stop using taxpayers money like it's an ATM machine to be used when they want to spend money. Elect me so I can question and challenge them at every opportunity of how this benefits the tax payers of London. I will ask is this something the majority of Londoners want? ie. No more spending $160,000 for 7 metal trees. By controlling spending and making better decisions, we can then fund social programs, help the needy and maintain vital services such as police and fire.

  3. Jobs and the Economy. London still has one of the highest unemployment rates in Canada and yet nobody is talking about this very important issue. We need to work to make London an attractive place to do business again. Elect me and every time they want to spend your money; I will ask ... Will this create any jobs in London? Will this help someone who is unemployed? Will this help attract to new business to London? Today, most new jobs are created by small business. I will remind them at every opportunity how important this is to the future of London. If we don't create jobs and grow, then it makes even more difficult to fund social programs, help the needy and maintain vital services such as police and fire.

  4. Student Housing. Many residents are concerned with the ever encroachment of student housing in our neighborhoods. Elect me and I will make this a focus of my term not only because of the many concerns I have received from residents but also because I am affected personally. I am surrounded by student housing so I can relate to your concerns and will work hard to make things better.

  5. Improve Traffic Congestion. I am tired of being stuck in the constant grid lock of traffic. Elect me and I will ensure the city synchronizes our traffic lights and improve traffic flow. This will produce many benefits: improve the environment, it will improve the air we breath, reduce stress of drivers and road rage and possibly reduce accidents.

  6. 7 Day Garbage Pickup. I would like the City to go back to a 7 day garbage pickup. Elect me and I will push this issue forward on behalf of the residents of Ward 3. Going to a 7 day pickup does not mean there will be more garbage going to the landfills. We can still work to reduce how much garbage we are actually putting out at the curbs.

  7. Crime Prevention. Support crime prevention programs, safer streets and neighborhoods (police on the streets). Ward 3 residents have made it clear when I go door to door that crime is a big concern.

  8. Healthcare. Continue to support the recruitment of new doctors. There are approximately 30,000 Londoners without a family doctor, I find this totally unacceptable for a City that is known for its' healthcare.

  9. Environment. I will work to reduce the environmental impact of City Hall activities. For example, I believe we can reduce pollution by improving traffic flow/congestion problems. I will support the use of the 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at every opportunity in a proactive responsible way.

  10. Services. Improve services by eliminating duplication and waste at City Hall. Henry is a Kaizen expert and can make this happen because he has a proven track record of helping companies continually improve how they deliver their products and services, while maintaining costs or in fact even lowering them.

"Henry Zupanc is a business owner, so he knows how to get things done, build relationships and, maybe most importantly, how to respect a tight budget, and prioritize what's the most do-able, practical, from all the possibilities. Entrepreneurial sensibility is what's desperately needed in public service, and it's that spirit that Henry Zupanc can bring to Council".
